Korean American Community of San Francisco established in November 1912 

Background

San Francisco is the place where many leaders of the Koran Independence Movement, such as Ahn Chang-ho, Jang In-Whan, Jeon Myeong-un, Lee Dae-wii(David Lee) were active; it is also where the immigrants have left their imprint on history.

The first Korean immigrants faced extreme labor under harsh conditions, and were challenged by the language barriers in their new settlement. Korean churches and Korean center played a central role in building the Korean community. These figures in the community helped to lessen the cultural and social gap by uniting each other. A wave of Korean immigrants swarmed into San Francisco in the 1960’s and Dong-woo Kim inaugurated as the first president of KAACSF(KACCSF) in 1965. 

Mission Statement

 Korean American Community of San Francisco & Bay Area assists all Korean Americans in San Francisco and the Bay Area promote the cultural, social, educational, and economic progress of Korean-American. The organization builds an alternative community where Korean Americans can bridge the cultural gap between Korean Americans and other ethnic communities in SF and Bay Area through educating the public about the Korean culture and diverse programs. For instance KAACSF(KACCSF) has organized and held the Annual Korean Day Festival since 1992. These Programs and events re-examine the Korean experience and re-evaluate the placement of Korean Americans in the society. In 1989, the KAACSF(KACCSF) moved to its current address on Buchanan Street, in the Western Addition District. This location allows the association to communicate with more diverse populations in the Fillmore neighborhood. The mission is to support and cultivate the contributions of Korean Americans by workshops, educational programs, and events by the community. The community has provided various services and classes to more than 150,000 Korean Americans at no cost.

샌프란시스코 한인회는 북가주에 거주하는 한인사회를 대표하는 기관입니다.

한인들에게는 우리문화를 통해 한민족의 정서를 나눔으로써 유대감을 가지고 자신감 있고 보다 짜임새 있는 생활을 하는데 도움을 줄 것이며 문화를 매개체로 하여 세대간의 대화의 소재를 제공할 것입니다.

또한 북가주에 거주하는 다양한 민족들에게 한국문화를 소개함으로써 6,25전쟁이나 세계유일의 분단국가로서의 이미지만이 아닌 오랜 역사와 그 속에 묻어있는 더불어 사는 정신을 표현하는 우리문화를 널리 알리는데도 그 중요한 역할이 있습니다. 

샌프란시스코 한인회 목적은,

교포사회의 내적인 단결과 화합을 바탕으로 하여 미국사회에 협력단체로서의 기능과 한인사회와 미국사회를 잇는 교량역할을 담당하고, 한인사회를 돕는 데에 있습니다. 

샌프란시스코 한인회는,

교민 상호간의 친목을 도모할 목적으로 1962년에 발족되었으나, 점차 늘어나는 한인 인구에 비례하여 그 기능이 다양하게 확대되어 갔습니다. 때로는 문화민족으로서의 긍지를 부각시키기 위해서 전체교민을 대상으로 하는 문화행사를 열었고, 때로는 소수민족의 권익을 위한 협력단체로써 정치적인 활동을 전개했고, 때로는 불행을 당한 교민들을 위해 자선사업을 벌이기도 했습니다. 

샌프란시스코 한인회는,

우리 교민들과 한인사회를 보다 체계적이고 효율적으로 돕기 위해, 1980년에는 이민국에서 실시하여 왔던 시민권 인터뷰를 한인회관에서 실시하도록 유치하는 등 다각적인 활동을 정립하고 본격적인 한인사회의 대표기관으로써 이제 그 역할을 담당하기에 이르렀습니다.
